ライル・ワークマン

『ハーモニック・クルーセーダー』

ライル・ワークマンって言う名前は１９８０年代に初めて聞いた。ブルジュア・タッグのギターだった。その後はスタジオとサイド・ミュジシャンになって、元ピクシーズボーカルの フランク・ブラック、トッド・ランドグレンなどと一緒にライブやアルバムを参加した。最近は映画音楽も作っている。 『スーパーバッド 童貞ウォーズ』のサントラが１００万枚も売れた。でも彼の演奏は聞いたことなかった。

『ハーモニック・クルーセーダー』が３作目のソロ・アルバム。インターネットや音楽雑誌の評判が良くて、買ってしまった。最高。ギターも素晴らしいけど、このアルバムのメイン・ポイントは曲の流れ。面白くて、一曲の間にいろんな味と雰囲気がある。

Lyle Workman

Harmonic Crusader

Lyle Workman has been a name familiar to me for years but it wasn't until 2009 that I finally got around to really listening to him. I was aware that he had been the guitarist in Bourgeois Tagg, a late '80s pop-rock band. After that he became a prominent session musician and sideman for hire, most notably with former Pixies vocalist, Frank Black. In recent years he has moved into soundtracks, with his Superbad soundtrack selling more than one million copies.

In parallel with his studio and soundtrack work, Workman has released several solo albums, the latest of which is Harmonic Crusader. After reading rave reviews on the Internet, as well as interviews and profiles in several music magazines, I decided to pick it up.

The interesting thing about Harmonic Crusader is that, while it does indeed feature amazing guitar work - Workman's mastery of the e-bow is particularly impressive - it is far from the typical 'geetar' album. The orchestral sweep of the compositions with their progression through various movements and moods is what most impresses here. Equally impressive is Workman's focus on the big picture, giving key solos to keyboardists, Larry Goldings and Jeff Babko.

『シェーク・ハンズ・ウィズ・ショーティー』

ノース・ミシシッピ・オールスターズ(NMA)は、ルーサー＆コーディ・ディッキンソン兄弟と、ベースのクリス・チュウの3人組。1996年の活動開始以来、ルーサーの疾走感あふれるスライド・ギター、ブルースの枠を軽々と超えるジャムバンド的なインプロヴィゼーション、90年代のオルタナティヴ・ロックやパンク・ロックに通じるルーズなフィーリングなどが評価されている。二人の父ジム・ディッキンソンは、数々のミュージシャンと共演した名キーボーディスト&プロデューサー。

『シェーク・ハンズ・ウィズ・ショーティー』はノース・ミシシッピ・オールスターズの初アルバム。ミシシッピ・フレッド・マックダウエル、R.L.バーンサイドなどのカントリー・ブルーズ名曲を２１世紀に引っ張る。

Shake Hands With Shorty

The northern Mississippi hill country is one of the few places on Earth where you can still hear unvarnished country-blues, untainted by the modern world, in a steamy juke joint. Its music remained largely undiscovered until the '80s blues resurgence, when critic Robert Palmer and the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart made a documentary about the region, Deep Blues, which introduced the powerful, primal music of R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough and many others to the world.

Growing up in this area, the Dickinson brothers, Cody & Luther, could not help but be affected by the elemental music all around them, as well as the broader Southern music scene. Having legendary producer Jim Dickinson (Big Star & the Replacements) for a father only added further wrinkles to their stylistic make-up.

The North Mississippi Allstars were formed in 1996 by the Dickinsons and bassist/backing vocalist, Chris Chew, with the express intention of both honoring and extending the hill country tradition. Shake Hands With Shorty, was their debut album released in 2000. Comprised entirely of covers of hill country legends such as, McDowell, Burnside & Kimbrough, the Allstars manage to give it all a fresh feel with their natural enthusiasm, Cody's driving drumming, Luther's Allman-esque slide guitar and Chris Chew's essential, gospel-y backing vocals.

Robben Ford
Soul On Ten

While he may not be a household name to the public at large, Robben Ford is the very of a guitar player's guitarist. In an illustrious and varied career covering now four decades, he has gone from being a jazzy-blues guitarist to a fusion playing sessioneer and back again. In that impressive forty year span, he has worked with Charlie Musselwhite, Jimmy Witherspoon, Tom Scott & LA Express, George Harrison, Joni Mitchell, KISS, Barbra Streisand, Michael McDonald, Sadao Watanabe, David Sanborn, Miles Davis, Gregg Allman, Phil Lesh (of the Grateful Dead) and many more.

He is both a sympathetic accompanist and a distinctive soloist. Even though the settings he is found in can sometimes be formulaic or uninspired, his playing is anything but. He is rarely gratuitously flashy, tending towards tasteful statements imbued with inspired note choices, inventive phrasing and constantly pushing at the boundaries.

His latest album, Soul On Ten, finds him back with a trio for the first time since the Blue Line, his group of the early-to-mid-Nineties. This context affords him the opportunity to stretch out more than usual on guitar and play up the interaction with Travis Carlton on bass (Larry's son) and Toss Panos on drums.

ルツのハロウェインライブ

ルツのハロウェインライブは楽しかった！

久しぶりルツでライブをしました。

日本人と韓国人１０人最大なグループサウンドはやかった。若い日本人と韓国の方々が力を会わせて仲良しよい音楽を作るには私は心からとてもhappyとなります。韓国男が僕のベースプレイングを気に入れてくれた、嬉しいです。話したところは彼がまだベース４年だけなんですが、恥ずかしい話ですが、私はベースの経験は３０年以上。彼に少し助言したのは、ベースの難しさは心を指先につなぐなこと。尊敬しているベースプレヤーをまねするは大事ですが、自分らしいベース弾くには心に入っているももを指先に。。。

マイケル・ランドウ
『Tales From The Bulge』

マイケル・ランドウは1980年代から1990年代にかけて、セッションプレイヤーとして大きな成功を収めた。ピンク・フロイド、マイルズ・デイヴィス、ロッド・スチュワートなどの大物の作品に起用される人気ミュージシャンとなった。日本人ミュージシャンの作品にも参加しており、矢沢永吉、氷室京介、浜田麻里等のレコーディングに参加している。1990年代からは自身のソロ活動やバンド活動も精力的にこなすようになり、1990年には初のソロアルバム『Tales From The Bulge』を発表。

1993年ごろに私が御茶ノ水のディスクユニオンの安売りコーナーでそのアルバムを見付けた。『名前聞いたことあるな〜』みたいなかんじで、１０００円で買った。最初聴いた時はあまり感動しなかった。『１９８０年代くさい』と思った。たしかに、今聴いても、とくにドラムズの音とコーラスを使っているバック・ギターがちょっと物足りないけれども、ランドウの曲とプレィとユーモアに負ける。

ほかのギター・アルバムと違って、『Tales From The Bulge』の曲はギターソロのためだけじゃなくて、メロディーのためにある。曲の流れもちゃんとあるし、フックも頭に残る。そして、やり過ぎなギターソロは全く無い。『ギターの素晴らしいテクニックを見せよ！』って考えているギタリストは多いけど、ランドウはソロアルバムの時でもさすがにティームプレィヤーです。

Michael Landau
Tales From The Bulge

One of the most recorded guitarists of the last 30 years, Michael Landau is a key figure of the booming LA session scene of the '80s and early '90s. He has appeared on albums by a diverse range of artists from Miles Davis to Pink Floyd to Rod Stewart and hundreds more as well as touring with Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Boz Scaggs & Crusty favourite, Robben Ford. In 1989, he began recording his first solo album, Tales from the Bulge. Eventually released in 1990 in Japan & the US, the album features contributions from Vinnie Colaiuta and jazz legend, Wayne Shorter, among others.

I stumbled across this album while browsing the cut-out bins at Disk Union in Ochanomizu, not long after I first arrived in Japan in 1993. I had a vague recollection of his name, largely through his connection with session legend & Toto guitarist, Steve Lukather. Deciding that it was probably worth the 1000 yen they were asking, I picked it up.

To be honest, its charms were not immediate and tended to be clouded in an '80s production haze. The heavily processed drums and that chorus sound (for which Landau is held in high regard in certain guitar geek circles) tend to date the album. After further listens, however, the strength of the compositions and the sheer tastiness of Landau's playing make up for any production deficiencies.

He avoids flash. The compositions are not mere vehicles to showcase superior technique but, rather, actual songs with catchy melodies that tell a story. The solos are short, focused and complement the compositions. Where other players feel the need to 'hit the ground running', as it were, with gratuitous displays of chops, Landau lays down a few choice, bluesy bends and gradually builds to a satisfying climax.

『ライフボート』

「フュージョン」と言えば１９７０年代の大臣、マイルズ、マハヴィシュヌ・オーケストラ、リターン・トゥ・フォーエヴァー、ヘッド・ハンターズなど、だな。１９８０年代にいつの間にかにスムーズ・ジャズになったけれども、自分のなかではいつまでもフュージョン＝１９７０年代のサウンド。トライバル・テックが２０００年ぐらいに解散して、本物のフュージョンが眠ってしまった。

ジミー・ヘリングの初ソロアルバム『ライフボート』で、１９７０年代のサウンドが帰ってくれた。ジミー・ヘリングは色んなジャム・バンドとやってきた。ザ・デッド、ザ・オールマン・ブラザーズ・バンド、ワイドスプレッド・パニックなどのギタリストで活動している。ジャム・バンドでも、フュージョンの味がした。このアルバムはその味ばっかり。

Lifeboat

'Fusion' is a much-maligned and oft-misunderstood genre. Although it is now synonymous with the soothing sounds of the Weather Channel and the dentist's surgery, there was a time in the late '60s/early '70s when this music was the very epitome of cutting edge. Miles Davis, the many bands formed by his former employees, such as John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band & Head Hunters, Chick Corea's Return to Forever and, in turn, their many followers, could be relied on to perform challenging music that combined the ferocity of rock with the sophistication of jazz. Indian, Latin, soul, R&B and gospel and western classical influences also heavily informed the music.

'Lifeboat' is a fine album in the '70s tradition. That it should come from a guitarist more closely associated with jam bands, such as Aquarium Rescue Unit, the Dead and Phil Lesh & Friends and currently, Widespread Panic, may come as a surprise. If you've never heard Jimmy Herring. Never afraid to throw sophisticated ideas into the simplest jams, his first album as leader allows him to give his fusion jones a thorough workout. Obviously inspired by the pioneering heavyweights mentioned above, as well as fellow Southerner and key influence, Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs, the album trades in the tricky time signatures, majestic chord progressions and extended, virtuosic solos that defined the genre back in its prime.

He has also made sure to surround himself with wonderful players, including long-time friends, the Burbridge brothers, Kofi & Oteil (of the Derek Trucks Band & the Allmans respectively), past-and-future Tribal Tech keyboard maestro, Scott Kinsey and drummer extraordinaire, Jeff Sipe.

船橋ルツは久しぶり

今月末に（10/31）久しぶり船橋ルツライブです(Halloween Party Live 2009)。
昔からスタッフも親切だしとても雰囲気が良いライブハウスと思います。
店長Ａｎｄｙは頑張りやでナイスガィですね。

なおさらも一つ大切なこともあります。実はルツでマサヒト君は出会ったライブハウス。そのときに彼はグーなＲ＆Ｂバンドの参加ですが、彼らのステージが終りましたら、話を開始しました。面白いヤングボィーと思いました、最後に名詞をわたしました。幸いに彼からジャムセッション遣りましょうのメール届きました。かれはわざわざ土田舎まで来ていただきグーレットセッションが行いました。幸いな結果はマサヒト君がクランキーのドラムとなりました。

嬉しいアンッドマサヒト君に心から感謝です。

ジェリー・ダグラス

『ザ・ベスト・ケプト・シークレット』

ドブロ・ギター（正しくはリゾネーター・ギター）は普通のアコースティック・ギターと違って、「リゾネーター」と呼ばれる、円形の薄いアルミニウム製の共鳴板をブリッジの下に取り付けている。ボディはブルースに使用される場合金属製の物が多く、ブルーグラスミュージックには木製のものが使用される。ブルーグラスミュージックのドブロ・ギターと言えば、ジェリー・ダグラス。

２００４年のエリック・クラプトンのクロスロード・ギター・フェスティヴァルでジェリー・ダグラスがカントリー王様ヴィンス・ギルと一緒に出ていた。クロスロード・ギター・フェスティヴァルでいろんな素晴らしいギタリスト（ BBキング、EC、ジェフ・ベック、 サンタナ、スティーブ・ヴァイなど）が出ても、ジェリー・ダグラスが目立っていた。

『ザ・ベスト・ケプト・シークレット』って言うCDでエレキーもウェザー・レポートの曲もやるって話聞いたら、是非聴きたいと思った。このCDはジェリー・ダグラスのドブロがいろんな音楽のジャンル出来るってはっきり見せる。

Jerry Douglas

The Best Kept Secret

The dobro guitar is probably best-known to those of a certain age as the guitar pictured on the cover of Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms. Strictly speaking, 'dobro' is actually one of several brands of resonator guitars but in contemporary use and, certainly in the world of bluegrass, 'dobro' and 'resonator' are interchangeable. A resonator uses a resonator plate to amplify the sound of the strings. Possessed of a unique tone somewhere between a banjo and a steel-string acoustic, it has found itself particularly suited to blues and bluegrass.

Any mention of bluegrass dobro must include Jerry Douglas, probably the finest living player and certainly one of the most important dobro players of all time. Although his name had been familiar to me for many years - and, unbeknownst to me, I'd actually heard him on the Coen Brothers' 'O, Brother Where Art Thou?' soundtrack - it wasn't until 2004 that I finally heard him. As featured soloist with Vince Gill at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival, he truly stood out in a world-class field of guitarists. He is in full possession of the three 'T's - tone, technique & taste.

When I heard that he was releasing an album that featured his electric slide playing and a dobro take on Weather Report's 'A Remark You Made', I knew that I had to hear it. An eclectic masterpiece, The Best Kept Secret shows how seamlessly Douglas' musicality transcends the musical setting.

シェーン・テリオー
『ダーティー・パワー』

シェーン・テリオーは1995～96年ごろに知っていた。ブライアン・ストルツの代わりにネヴィル・ブラザーズのギターとして入った。ネヴィル・ブラザー ズとブライアン・ストルツのライブをアデレードで見たことあって、ストルツの演奏を感動した。代わりにやる人もきっと上手いと思った。

2000年にニュー・オーリーンズ・ジャズ・フェストに行った時に、たまたまシェーン・テリオーがタワー・レコードで無料ライブをやっていた。びっくりし た。ある雑誌にテリオーが自分の音楽はニュー・オーリーンズのリズムとウェザ・レポートのメロディーをミックスしたいって言た。タワー・レコードで聴いた 音楽はその通りだった。

今回紹介するCDは3rdソロ・アルバム『ダーティー・パワー』。さすがに天才ドラマーが集まった。スタジオ・レジェンド・ジム・ケルトナー、元メーターズのファンク神様ジョー“シガブー”モデリストなど参加している。

Shane Theriot
Dirty Power

I first became aware of Shane Theriot in the mid-90s, when he replaced Brian Stoltz as the guitarist for the Neville Brothers. I had seen the Nevilles with Stoltz in Adelaide and been very impressed with his extended call-and-response solo with Charles Neville on 'Yellow Moon'. I figured the guy that replaced him would want to be a pretty happening player, too.

When I went New Orleans for Jazz Fest in 2000, I stumbled across Theriot playing a free gig at Tower Records. As I had never actually heard him before, I was more than a little blown away. In a magazine article he had expressed his desire for his music to combine New Orleans' rhythmic sophistication with Weather Report's harmonic and melodic sophistication. That was exactly what I heard on that day.

Shane consistently plays with awesome drummers and Dirty Power, his 3rd solo album, is no exception. Studio legend, Jim Keltner, ex-Meters funk maestro, Joseph 'Zigaboo' Modeliste, Richie Hayward of Little Feat and long time New Orleans compatriot, Doug Belote all lay down fat back grooves.

久しぶりで投稿

ラスベガスから帰りました。久々アメリカ大陸に行って非常に面白かった。通訳の仕事と打ち合わせばっかりでしたが、少し時間をとってThe Stripに行きました。飛塚ご夫婦と私Caesars Palaceにいきました。豪華な高級品ブランド店が多くて男性のジャケットは20万一寸予算オーバーですね。

お昼に美味しそうな店に入り飛塚ご夫婦はロブスターフォーツーランチをたのみました。流石、アメリカのスケールみんなはおてんこもり！！！

シューシャイン

一ヶ月前に三越銀座点で新しい靴を買った。初めてイタリア製靴購入しましたが、とても快適の上素敵な靴と思っております。

ミネアポリス空港に中にはシューシャイン店がありました。初シャインが行えました。暢気なミシシッピ出身黒人男でした。携帯電話で語りながらシャインが始まり、電話が終わったら、いらしゃえbrotherな感じ挨拶。直ちに彼から不況の話を始まり。

シャイン男：マーン俺が子供５人だ。俺は大変だぜぇ。
スティーブ：それは大変だ。でも奥様がかれらをお世話してるでしょう。
シャイン男：ノーマーン母親は別々３人だよ。でも俺はいいパパだよ。一生懸命仕事やっているから。俺は仕事が三つ持っている。でも大変マーン。
スティーブ：それは大変だ。頑張りましょう。

も一人いましたが、ジャンボ宝くじ紙を記入するため、ペンを探し。私から彼にラッキーペンを返して、条件はあたったらクランキーのスポンサーになる約束。

ああ面白かった。

カール・ヴァーヘイエン

カール・ヴァーヘイエンの名前を１９９３年か１９９４年ぐらいに『ギター・プレイヤー』で見た。興味が出て、渋谷のタワー・レコードで彼のCDを探した。早速、カール・ヴァーヘイエンの初ソロ・アルバム『No Borders』 を買った。ギター・テクニックが素晴らしかったけど、ブルーズ大好きな私には物足りなかった。その時代の人気シュレッドギターアルバムだった。何回か聴いて、そしてすっかり忘れちゃった。

２１世紀になり、カール・ヴァーヘイエンの曲『Jet Plane Blues』が私のPCに有った。聴いたら、完全に見直した。ブルーズなんだけど、カール・ヴァーヘイエンの味がすごく出ていた。彼しか出来ないブルーズだった。ジェッフ・ベックやエリック・クラプトンの影響が聴こえるけど、フレージングと音選びが自分らしくて最高。ヴァーヘイエンは元々ビートルズとブルーズが大好きで、その影響を見せたかった。２作目『Garage Sale』と特に３作目『Slang Justice』からは曲作りと歌を大事にしている。

あれから、カール・ヴァーヘイエンの新しいCDをいつも楽しみにしている。特に、今年５月に出た『トレーディング・エイツ』はそうだった。なぜかって言うと、ヴァーヘイエン以外にも私が大好きなプレイヤーは沢山出ている。今回のポッドキャストで紹介するジョー・ボナマサとリック・ヴィートとスコット・ヘンダーソン以外にも、ロベン・フォードもアルバート・リーもスティーブ・モースも参加している。

I first became aware of Carl Verheyen through Guitar Player magazine in the early '90s. Duly impressed by the glowing write-up, I dutifully went and picked up his first solo album, No Borders, from Tower Records in Shibuya. To be honest, I wasn't that impressed. This was the tail end of the 'shred' era and this album was very much of that time. He was obviously very proficient in a variety of styles but the setting left blues-loving Crusty a bit cold and the CD wound up getting spun a few times and then largely forgotten.

Verheyen obviously felt the same way. A die-hard Beatles fan, Verheyen changed his style by going back to his roots and focusing on songs and a bluesier style of guitar playing. While that change is evident on his second album, Garage Sale, it really became prominent with his third album, Slang Justice. More vocal-oriented it also featured more than a couple of blues numbers, including that hoary old chestnut, 'Two Trains Running' and Verheyen's own take on the form, 'Jet Plane Blues'. The latter featured a solo that brilliantly showcases his ability to combine traditional blues clichés with his own intervallic thing and sound like nobody but Carl Verheyen.

It was this song that found its way onto my computer - that seemed to happen quite a bit at the start of the century ; ) - and promptly brought Carl Verheyen back onto my music radar. I have since eagerly awaited each new release. With Trading 8s this is possibly even more true because of the stellar players he has guesting with him. In addition to the three included in this podcast - Joe Bonamassa, Scott Henderson and Rick Vito - it features Crusty faves, Robben Ford (possibly the tastiest blues player alive), Albert Lee (country guitar wouldn't be the same without him. And that's a good thing) and Steve Morse (of the Dixie Dregs! Enough said).

二が月前程にポール君と僕はポッドキャストを作り始めて。内容は日本にあまり知られていなしギタープレイヤー、やバンドを紹介番組開始します。今現在は第一から第八まで、ほぼ完了しました。

少し編集が必要ですが、今週末にアップできるように頑張ります。

この間東京駅で、白人グループ（フィンランドから家族二つ）はJRの所に迷っていた。可哀想から声をかけました。結局全く同じ駅（浜松町）わ希望だったので、一緒に山の手線を乗りました。さよならときに私はクランキーの名刺を渡して、帰ったらウェブサイトご拝見してくださいと言いました。それでバイバイ。

今朝はGoogle Analyticalをチェックした時になとかフィンランドからご訪問者出ました。やっぱり嬉しいですね！

神田駅前偶然物語り

今週ばたばたをして忙しいでしょうがない。最近は通訳仕事を受けて、ただいま東京３泊です。後も一泊ですが、ホテルは神田です。仕事は大体夜１０時以降で終わります。やはり神田は面白いお店は沢山がある。最初の日は焼き鳥や発見。一人で入ってカウンターですね。狭くて込み込み、賑やかな雰囲気。やぱし焼き鳥は甘い！！！

夕べも二日連続帰りながら同じ店を入って、金曜日でさらに込んでいた。隣のお客さんが私に話をかかれて、盛り上がりました。かれの友達は女性な方（美穂）でしたが、かれは彼女に「この外人は面白いだから席交換をして話をしてごらん」。とても面白い女性なんですが、非常に不思議なこともありました。

美穂：あなたは何年うまれですが？

Steve：昭和３８です。

美穂：ええあたしもそうよ。

Steve：まじですか？！？！？じゃ同じ年齢ですね。血液型は？

美穂：A型です

Steve：うそうんじゃ、僕もそうですよう。

美穂：本当に。。。不思議ですね。

Steve：じゃじゃ、も一つ聴きましょう、星座は？

美穂：さそり座です。

Steve：えええええええ本間かぇ！！！僕もさそり座です。

ややや、楽しくてしょうがない。スペシャルゲストバンドも抜群なステージもお行えましたし、クランキーは相変わらずクランキーらしいステージでした。

やぱしぃ自分の作曲を弾くのは楽しいですね。自分が作成した歌詞の意味も思い出しながら、心から歌えます（Steve泣くな）。

クランキー族の皆さんも楽しんでいましたと思います。常連メンバーも新規顔もあり、今後も是非応援していただきたく存知おります。
