『ライフボート』

「フュージョン」と言えば１９７０年代の大臣、マイルズ、マハヴィシュヌ・オーケストラ、リターン・トゥ・フォーエヴァー、ヘッド・ハンターズなど、だな。１９８０年代にいつの間にかにスムーズ・ジャズになったけれども、自分のなかではいつまでもフュージョン＝１９７０年代のサウンド。トライバル・テックが２０００年ぐらいに解散して、本物のフュージョンが眠ってしまった。

ジミー・ヘリングの初ソロアルバム『ライフボート』で、１９７０年代のサウンドが帰ってくれた。ジミー・ヘリングは色んなジャム・バンドとやってきた。ザ・デッド、ザ・オールマン・ブラザーズ・バンド、ワイドスプレッド・パニックなどのギタリストで活動している。ジャム・バンドでも、フュージョンの味がした。このアルバムはその味ばっかり。

Lifeboat

'Fusion' is a much-maligned and oft-misunderstood genre. Although it is now synonymous with the soothing sounds of the Weather Channel and the dentist's surgery, there was a time in the late '60s/early '70s when this music was the very epitome of cutting edge. Miles Davis, the many bands formed by his former employees, such as John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band & Head Hunters, Chick Corea's Return to Forever and, in turn, their many followers, could be relied on to perform challenging music that combined the ferocity of rock with the sophistication of jazz. Indian, Latin, soul, R&B and gospel and western classical influences also heavily informed the music.

'Lifeboat' is a fine album in the '70s tradition. That it should come from a guitarist more closely associated with jam bands, such as Aquarium Rescue Unit, the Dead and Phil Lesh & Friends and currently, Widespread Panic, may come as a surprise. If you've never heard Jimmy Herring. Never afraid to throw sophisticated ideas into the simplest jams, his first album as leader allows him to give his fusion jones a thorough workout. Obviously inspired by the pioneering heavyweights mentioned above, as well as fellow Southerner and key influence, Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs, the album trades in the tricky time signatures, majestic chord progressions and extended, virtuosic solos that defined the genre back in its prime.

He has also made sure to surround himself with wonderful players, including long-time friends, the Burbridge brothers, Kofi & Oteil (of the Derek Trucks Band & the Allmans respectively), past-and-future Tribal Tech keyboard maestro, Scott Kinsey and drummer extraordinaire, Jeff Sipe.

船橋ルツは久しぶり

今月末に（10/31）久しぶり船橋ルツライブです(Halloween Party Live 2009)。
昔からスタッフも親切だしとても雰囲気が良いライブハウスと思います。
店長Ａｎｄｙは頑張りやでナイスガィですね。

なおさらも一つ大切なこともあります。実はルツでマサヒト君は出会ったライブハウス。そのときに彼はグーなＲ＆Ｂバンドの参加ですが、彼らのステージが終りましたら、話を開始しました。面白いヤングボィーと思いました、最後に名詞をわたしました。幸いに彼からジャムセッション遣りましょうのメール届きました。かれはわざわざ土田舎まで来ていただきグーレットセッションが行いました。幸いな結果はマサヒト君がクランキーのドラムとなりました。

嬉しいアンッドマサヒト君に心から感謝です。

対バンドとソロ女子アーチストーは全てとても上手でした。

わざわざちばらきからEric君ご来店していただき。Stephen Hooper氏もママちゃりでライブに来ました。

お客様はその程多くなかったですが、ともかく盛り上がれ。

また次回に同じメンバーと一緒にでれば嬉しいと思います。

『ザ・ベスト・ケプト・シークレット』

ドブロ・ギター（正しくはリゾネーター・ギター）は普通のアコースティック・ギターと違って、「リゾネーター」と呼ばれる、円形の薄いアルミニウム製の共鳴板をブリッジの下に取り付けている。ボディはブルースに使用される場合金属製の物が多く、ブルーグラスミュージックには木製のものが使用される。ブルーグラスミュージックのドブロ・ギターと言えば、ジェリー・ダグラス。

２００４年のエリック・クラプトンのクロスロード・ギター・フェスティヴァルでジェリー・ダグラスがカントリー王様ヴィンス・ギルと一緒に出ていた。クロスロード・ギター・フェスティヴァルでいろんな素晴らしいギタリスト（ BBキング、EC、ジェフ・ベック、 サンタナ、スティーブ・ヴァイなど）が出ても、ジェリー・ダグラスが目立っていた。

『ザ・ベスト・ケプト・シークレット』って言うCDでエレキーもウェザー・レポートの曲もやるって話聞いたら、是非聴きたいと思った。このCDはジェリー・ダグラスのドブロがいろんな音楽のジャンル出来るってはっきり見せる。

The Best Kept Secret

The dobro guitar is probably best-known to those of a certain age as the guitar pictured on the cover of Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms. Strictly speaking, 'dobro' is actually one of several brands of resonator guitars but in contemporary use and, certainly in the world of bluegrass, 'dobro' and 'resonator' are interchangeable. A resonator uses a resonator plate to amplify the sound of the strings. Possessed of a unique tone somewhere between a banjo and a steel-string acoustic, it has found itself particularly suited to blues and bluegrass.

Any mention of bluegrass dobro must include Jerry Douglas, probably the finest living player and certainly one of the most important dobro players of all time. Although his name had been familiar to me for many years - and, unbeknownst to me, I'd actually heard him on the Coen Brothers' 'O, Brother Where Art Thou?' soundtrack - it wasn't until 2004 that I finally heard him. As featured soloist with Vince Gill at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival, he truly stood out in a world-class field of guitarists. He is in full possession of the three 'T's - tone, technique & taste.

When I heard that he was releasing an album that featured his electric slide playing and a dobro take on Weather Report's 'A Remark You Made', I knew that I had to hear it. An eclectic masterpiece, The Best Kept Secret shows how seamlessly Douglas' musicality transcends the musical setting.
