Soul On Ten

While he may not be a household name to the public at large, Robben Ford is the very of a guitar player's guitarist. In an illustrious and varied career covering now four decades, he has gone from being a jazzy-blues guitarist to a fusion playing sessioneer and back again. In that impressive forty year span, he has worked with Charlie Musselwhite, Jimmy Witherspoon, Tom Scott & LA Express, George Harrison, Joni Mitchell, KISS, Barbra Streisand, Michael McDonald, Sadao Watanabe, David Sanborn, Miles Davis, Gregg Allman, Phil Lesh (of the Grateful Dead) and many more.

He is both a sympathetic accompanist and a distinctive soloist. Even though the settings he is found in can sometimes be formulaic or uninspired, his playing is anything but. He is rarely gratuitously flashy, tending towards tasteful statements imbued with inspired note choices, inventive phrasing and constantly pushing at the boundaries.

His latest album, Soul On Ten, finds him back with a trio for the first time since the Blue Line, his group of the early-to-mid-Nineties. This context affords him the opportunity to stretch out more than usual on guitar and play up the interaction with Travis Carlton on bass (Larry's son) and Toss Panos on drums.
