ザ・ワード

ジョン・メデスキ、ザ・ノース・ミシシッピ・オールスターズ、ロバート・ランドルフ 「セイクレッド・スティール」はペダル・スティールやスティール・ギターを用いてのゴスペル演奏。１９９９年に『Sacred Steel, Vol.2: Live at the House of God Church』って言うアルバムが出た。ジョン・メデスキ（メデスキ、マーティン＆ウッドのキーボード）もザ・ノース・ミシシッピ・オールスターズ（NMA）のルーサー・ディッキンソン（voc., gtr.）もそのアルバムを聴いて、感動しました。 特に６曲目Without God（ウィズアウト・ゴッド）が気に入った。その演奏がロバート・ランドルフ（ペダル・スティール）だった。 一緒のツアー中に何度も話し合ううちにこの結論が出された＜インストゥメンタルのゴスペル・アルバムを作ろう！＞。 ２０００年の夏にレコーディングの予定をやっとなった。その２週間前にNMAが偶然にロバート・ランドルフと一緒にライブして、さっそくロバート・ランドルフをレコーディングに招待。そして、ザ・ワードが生まれた。

The Word

John Medeski, the North Mississippi Allstars, Robert Randolph Apparently, the Word was born on a tour bus. John Medeski of Medeski, Martin & Wood and Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars (see podcast no. 7), while touring together in the late-90's, bonded over their shared love for Sacred Steel. Sacred Steel refers to music of the House of God churches played on the more affordable pedal steel guitar, rather than the organ. This style was popularized on two discs from the Arhoolie label, Sacred Steel (1997) and Sacred Steel, Vol. 2: Live at the House of God Church (1999). The latter disc featured a show-stopping version of the old spiritual 'Without God' by a young law clerk named Robert Randolph. The idea was hatched for Medeski with the Allstars to record an album of instrumental gospel tunes and studio time was booked. As luck would have it, two weeks before recording was set to begin the Allstars shared a stage with Randolph, playing one of his first non-church gigs. They invited him to participate in the recording and the Word was truly born. In spite of the last minute nature of his invitation, it is impossible to imagine the Word without Robert Randolph. In a truly star-making performance, Randolph's voice and vibe are front and centre for almost the entire recording. While not quite overwhelmed, Medeski and the Allstars, seasoned young veterans that they are, basically get out of Randolph's way and let him do his thing. Following the Word, Randolph has gone on to a successful career with his Family Band. The Word has reformed occasionally over the years to play at festivals and other events, and are set to do so again in the summer of 2010.
