スコット・ヘンダーソン

『ドッグ・パーティー』（１９９４年）

1954年8月26日にフロリダ、ウエスト・パーム・ビーチで生まれ、スコット・ヘンダーソンは幼い頃からギタープレイに目覚めていた。フロリダ・アトランテイック大学を卒業後、ミュージシャンズ・インスティチュートに入学しロサンゼルスで初期のキャリアをスタートさせる。それにはジャン・リュック・ポンテイ、ジェフ・バーリン、ジョー・ザヴィヌル、チック・コリア・エレクトリック・バンドらが含まれる。1984年にゲイリー・ウイリスとともにトライバル・テックを結成。1990年代にトライバルテックはもっとも高度なフュージョンバンドとの認知を得る。

ヘンダーソンは自身のブルースルーツに戻り、マニア心をくすぐるブルースアルバム、ドッグパーテイを1994年にリリース。トライバル・テックみたいなフュージョンを置いて、本格的なブルーズ・ロックだった。スティーヴィー・レイ・ヴォーンの影響も聴こえるし、ヘンダーソンの特別な曲スタイルも出る。

Dog Party (1994)

Born in West Palm Beach, Florida, on 26th August 1954, Scott Henderson first made a name for himself in the fertile early-80s L.A. fusion scene. Album and live appearances with Jean-Luc Ponty and Jeff Berlin (formerly of Bruford and Allan Holdsworth) lead to a high profile gig in Chick Corea's Elektric Band. From there, Henderson went on to form Tribal Tech with bassist Gary Willis. Tribal Tech featured Willis' and Henderson's uncompromising, original compositions harking back to 70s fusion acts, the Mahavishnu Orchestra and, particularly, Weather Report.

Henderson, however, continued to refer to himself as a 'blues' player and he began to slip bluesier and bluesier lines into his playing with each passing album. This reached a peak with his first solo album, Dog Party. Forsaking advanced harmony and rhythm for the most part, and featuring vocals for the first time - by drummer extraordinaire, Kirk Covington - this was an almost shockingly straightforward blues-rock album. The influence, or more precisely, inspiration, of Stevie Ray Vaughan hangs heavily over proceedings, but Henderson manages to pay tribute to his influences while still being very much himself. Later solo albums have proven more sophisticated and have more successfully melded his jazz, blues and rock influences but Dog Party shows a player digging into his roots and having a lot of fun.
