ライル・ワークマン

『ハーモニック・クルーセーダー』

ライル・ワークマンって言う名前は１９８０年代に初めて聞いた。ブルジュア・タッグのギターだった。その後はスタジオとサイド・ミュジシャンになって、元ピクシーズボーカルの フランク・ブラック、トッド・ランドグレンなどと一緒にライブやアルバムを参加した。最近は映画音楽も作っている。 『スーパーバッド 童貞ウォーズ』のサントラが１００万枚も売れた。でも彼の演奏は聞いたことなかった。

『ハーモニック・クルーセーダー』が３作目のソロ・アルバム。インターネットや音楽雑誌の評判が良くて、買ってしまった。最高。ギターも素晴らしいけど、このアルバムのメイン・ポイントは曲の流れ。面白くて、一曲の間にいろんな味と雰囲気がある。

Harmonic Crusader

Lyle Workman has been a name familiar to me for years but it wasn't until 2009 that I finally got around to really listening to him. I was aware that he had been the guitarist in Bourgeois Tagg, a late '80s pop-rock band. After that he became a prominent session musician and sideman for hire, most notably with former Pixies vocalist, Frank Black. In recent years he has moved into soundtracks, with his Superbad soundtrack selling more than one million copies.

In parallel with his studio and soundtrack work, Workman has released several solo albums, the latest of which is Harmonic Crusader. After reading rave reviews on the Internet, as well as interviews and profiles in several music magazines, I decided to pick it up.

The interesting thing about Harmonic Crusader is that, while it does indeed feature amazing guitar work - Workman's mastery of the e-bow is particularly impressive - it is far from the typical 'geetar' album. The orchestral sweep of the compositions with their progression through various movements and moods is what most impresses here. Equally impressive is Workman's focus on the big picture, giving key solos to keyboardists, Larry Goldings and Jeff Babko.

『シェーク・ハンズ・ウィズ・ショーティー』

ノース・ミシシッピ・オールスターズ(NMA)は、ルーサー＆コーディ・ディッキンソン兄弟と、ベースのクリス・チュウの3人組。1996年の活動開始以来、ルーサーの疾走感あふれるスライド・ギター、ブルースの枠を軽々と超えるジャムバンド的なインプロヴィゼーション、90年代のオルタナティヴ・ロックやパンク・ロックに通じるルーズなフィーリングなどが評価されている。二人の父ジム・ディッキンソンは、数々のミュージシャンと共演した名キーボーディスト&プロデューサー。

『シェーク・ハンズ・ウィズ・ショーティー』はノース・ミシシッピ・オールスターズの初アルバム。ミシシッピ・フレッド・マックダウエル、R.L.バーンサイドなどのカントリー・ブルーズ名曲を２１世紀に引っ張る。

Shake Hands With Shorty

The northern Mississippi hill country is one of the few places on Earth where you can still hear unvarnished country-blues, untainted by the modern world, in a steamy juke joint. Its music remained largely undiscovered until the '80s blues resurgence, when critic Robert Palmer and the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart made a documentary about the region, Deep Blues, which introduced the powerful, primal music of R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough and many others to the world.

Growing up in this area, the Dickinson brothers, Cody & Luther, could not help but be affected by the elemental music all around them, as well as the broader Southern music scene. Having legendary producer Jim Dickinson (Big Star & the Replacements) for a father only added further wrinkles to their stylistic make-up.

The North Mississippi Allstars were formed in 1996 by the Dickinsons and bassist/backing vocalist, Chris Chew, with the express intention of both honoring and extending the hill country tradition. Shake Hands With Shorty, was their debut album released in 2000. Comprised entirely of covers of hill country legends such as, McDowell, Burnside & Kimbrough, the Allstars manage to give it all a fresh feel with their natural enthusiasm, Cody's driving drumming, Luther's Allman-esque slide guitar and Chris Chew's essential, gospel-y backing vocals.
